Human AI: Optus’s Balanced Leap into the Future of Telecom

Evanne Evans, 25 Jul 2025

Australia’s telecommunications landscape is evolving, thanks to a thoughtful blend of AI innovation and human commitment. Since stepping into the role last November, Optus CEO Stephen Rue has positioned artificial intelligence as a cornerstone in reshaping the company’s operations and customer experience.

Streamlining with AI, Guided by Human Insight

Rue explains that AI is being used to detect and resolve network faults rapidly, empower customers to troubleshoot independently, and deliver tailored services by analyzing data in real-time and flagging anomalies for human oversight.

Yet, he remains firm that roles like field technicians, call-centre staff, and creative strategists are irreplaceable. AI supports, not replaces, human decision-making.

This cautious optimism follows two major incidents, a mass data breach and a lengthy outage, that shook public confidence. By integrating AI within a robust governance framework, Rue is rebuilding trust, enhancing resilience, and improving cost-efficiency.

Reaching the Bush: AI Meets Satellite Tech

Under Rue’s leadership, Optus is also exploring satellite partnerships (including Musk’s Starlink and others) to close Australia’s rural coverage gaps. Low-earth orbit satellites present a compellingly cost-effective solution to deliver mobile services to remote communities.

While regulatory hurdles have delayed Starlink initiatives, Rue remains open to broader provider collaboration to fulfill their universal coverage vision.

A Future Powered by Tech and Trust

Optus’s recent financial results are encouraging, with a 5.7% increase in profits to AU$2.2 billion and the addition of 238,000 new subscribers, including 52,000 postpaid customers, demonstrating momentum amid this transformation.

By pairing AI-driven efficiency with human-led judgment and satellite reach, Optus is forging a telecom model both futuristic and grounded, ready to redefine connectivity across Australia.
