India's 6G Vision: From 5G Powerhouse to Global Standards Leader

Evanne Evans, 25 Jul 2025

India is making waves in the global telecommunications arena, this time with the introduction of 6G. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has announced that India will play a central role in shaping future 6G regulations and standards. This shift follows India’s rapid ascent in 5G adoption, which now covers 82% of the population and nearly every district within just 22 months.

During a landmark visit to Bengaluru and meetings with the Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA), a consortium comprising over 80 industry, academic, and governmental contributors, Scindia announced that India plans to contribute 10% of its global 6G patents to research and development funding.

He emphasized that national programs like Anusandhan, Atmanirbharta, and Make in India are transforming the country into a "telecom superpower" with homegrown technological stacks.

India's strategy extends beyond just patent counts; it's about asserting influence in international standard-setting bodies, such as the ITU and 3GPP. By developing its own 4G and 5G tech stacks and achieving 60% import substitution in telecom equipment, India is demonstrating readiness to lead the 6G agenda.

Analysts say this push positions India not just as a participant, but as a shaper of policy, architecture, and governance frameworks for next-generation wireless. With ambitions to integrate features such as AI, satellite technology, and robust security into 6G protocols, India aims to elevate global connectivity standards.

India’s 6G strategy is both bold and structured: blending research funding, patent ambitions, and global collaboration to ensure it holds a decisive seat at the world’s telecom leadership table.
